Lesson C4.1

Timeouts and cascading failures

Play this lessonThis lesson comes with an interactive animation you can break and a chapter quiz.

Without a timeout, a call to a slow dependency waits forever. Each waiting request holds a thread or connection. When they're all used up, your service stops answering everyone, even requests that don't need the slow dependency. Then its callers fill up too. That's a cascading failure.
