System Design Visualized
Lesson 1.11

Logging, metrics and automation

Play this lessonThis lesson comes with an interactive animation you can break, a live-code challenge and a chapter quiz.

A small site can get by without these tools. A large business can't.

  • Logging: monitor error logs to find problems early. Logs can be checked per server, but it's easier to aggregate them into one central service.
  • Metrics:
    • Host level: CPU, memory, disk I/O
    • Aggregated level: performance of the whole database tier, cache tier…
    • Key business metrics: daily active users, retention, revenue
  • Automation: as systems grow, automate everything you can: continuous integration (every check-in tested automatically), builds, testing and deployment.

Key takeaways

  • Aggregate logs centrally.
  • Track host, tier and business metrics.
  • Automation keeps a big system healthy and the team productive.
